FIH standard weight and diameter
According to FIH standards, a field field hockey ball must have a diameter of between 71.3 and 74.8 mm and weigh between 156g and 163g. There are "mini" balls, of standard size but lighter, for the initiation of young children, as well as "street" balls, smaller and lighter, for playing in the garden, on the street, at home, etc.
How is a field hockey ball made?
A field hockey ball is made of solid or hollow plastic. On high-level balls, the center is occupied by cork or rubber. Depending on the composition of the plastic and the core, a ball will feel harder or softer and have a higher or lower rebound. The ball surface can be smooth or honeycombed.
Which ball for which type of terrain?
The smooth ball is suitable for sandy surfaces. The honeycombed ball, on the other hand, is suitable for wet pitches, as it offers greater grip on the playing surface and stick in a damp environment.
Practice ball or match ball?
Compared with training balls, match balls offer better touch, trajectory and speed.
