What is wingfoil?

Seducing more and more sportsmen and women since summer 2019, wingfoil consists in getting on a board equipped with a foil and using a wing, or wing, that you hold in your hand in order to capture the wind and propel the board on the water to move forward. Unlike windsurfing, where the sail is attached to a mast, the wingfoil is independent of the board, since you have to hold it in your hand. Modern wingfoils are lightweight and equipped with inflatable structures. Combining the sensations of windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing, wingfoil allows you to move across the water in complete freedom, even in very light winds.

What wingfoil equipment should I choose?

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced kiteboarder, it's essential to choose quality equipment to ensure your safety on the water and to get the most out of your session. The choice of kite, board, foil and leash is crucial. At DECATHLON, we offer lightweight inflatable wings that are easy to handle with your hands. These wings feature handles or a center bar for optimum grip, allowing you to catch the wind and propel your board. Wingfoil boards are generally shorter and wider than those used for windsurfing or kitesurfing, and are often fitted with straps and non-slip pads for the feet.

When it comes to choosing a board, a 100-liter board represents a good compromise between glide, stability and maneuverability. For smoother maneuvers, an 85-liter board is recommended. For greater stability, a 120-liter model is ideal. The foil, attached to the underside of the board, consists of a mast, a front wing, a rear wing (stabilizer) and a fuselage, and is needed to lift the board out of the water. To prevent the board from drifting, it must also be fitted with a leash, which connects the board to the rider to ensure safety.
