BUT WHY HANG AND CARRY YOUR COMPASS ON YOUR THUMB?
When you consider that the principle of orienteering is to use a map and a compass to find as many waypoints as possible in the allotted time, it's easy to see how time-saving tricks can help! Also, attaching your compass directly to the thumb of your choice allows you to read your map and compass simultaneously, all while running and with your hands free! Practical, isn't it?
AN AMBIDEXTROUS COMPASS COMPATIBLE WITH LEFT AND RIGHT THUMBS.
With a simple twist, the RACER 500 compass fits both right and left thumbs. In fact, this is a good opportunity to remind you that left-handers are generally more comfortable wearing their compass on their right thumb, and right-handers on their left; so you can keep your strong hand to spread the branches, keep your balance, or even to carry the electronic finger enabling you to validate the beacons!
THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN STABILITY AND SPEED FOR PRECISION
Because a stable needle enables you to read your compass while running, and therefore keep your course, we've opted for a "pivot" type needle; this constrains the needle to keep it on the right axis, while a stability disk moderates unwanted needle vibrations, improving your reading. Finally, a powerful magnet under the needle ensures a fast reaction time... What a time-saving combo!
WHEN ERGONOMICS RHYMES WITH PERFORMANCE!
More ergonomic, the new version of the RACER 500 compass features rounded corners, so you can wear it on your thumb for hours on end, and still forget about it (it's only a matter of time before your thumb hurts from running through brambles). What's more, the aiming angle has also been revised and is now even more precise than before. In short, I'm sure you'll agree that when comfort and precision are top priorities, so is performance!
AND WHAT ABOUT THE GRADUATIONS?
Did you know that the 3 cm graduated pointer at the end of the compass could help you find your way around and estimate distances on a map? "So... 2 cm on the map, if the scale is 1:15,000, that's 30,000 cm, so that's 300 m! You're going to have to be good at mental arithmetic!". In addition to linear graduation, our compass also features angular graduation, also known as secular, located every 2 degrees on the rotating capsule and allowing you to plot azimuths.
WHAT IS AN OIL BATH?
All Evadict compasses are filled with viscous oil; yes, it's true, when you put it that way, it doesn't sound very appealing, but I promise, it's for a good cause! In fact, the oil bath enables your compass to guarantee its performance in terms of speed, stability and precision... As you can see, the oil bath also helps ensure your own orienteering performance! And that's important, isn't it?
CAN I USE MY COMPASS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD?
As this compass is balanced for use in the northern hemisphere, if you use it near the equator or in the southern hemisphere, your compass will still point north, but its stability will be altered.
OUR TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR COMPASS
Because your compass is a precious ally in CO (not to say your favorite partner...), here are a few recommendations to take care of it as much as it takes care of you: we advise you to store your compass in a temperate place, and to avoid temperatures that are too low or too high, as well as changes in pressure. Finally, after use, we recommend storing it in a cloth pouch to protect it from scratches.
AN ECO-DESIGNED COMPASS
Following the improvements we've made to it, the new version of the RACER 500 compass bears the eco-designed label. Specifically, we've opted for a glycolized polyester plate instead of Plexiglas, and inserted two holes in the thumb plate to accommodate a magnifying glass, making this compass lighter. All these changes have enabled us to considerably reduce the overall environmental impact of the RACER 500.
