Which size/shape to choose?

Above all, as with any sports shoe, your field hockey shoes must fit your feet. First, avoid pressure points. Secondly, your foot must not be able to move inside the shoe. This is particularly important when the playing surface is synthetic turf. Depending on the manufacturer, some models are specifically designed for women. They are designed for a smaller stature and a less voluminous foot morphology.

Which size/shape to choose (continued)

Some women have a small shoe size and therefore tend to opt for junior shoes, which are not adapted to adult stature. How do you know if the shoe you're trying on fits properly? Put on a pair of field hockey socks. Plant your foot firmly in the ground. While applying vertical pressure, try to move your foot in the shoe in all directions. It should not be able to move.

Why a specific field hockey shoe?

Field field hockey shoes offer 2 sport-specific features: reinforcements, particularly on the forefoot and heel, to protect the foot against ball and stick impacts, and a sole adapted to sanded or wet synthetic turf specific to field hockey, to ensure the required grip on these surfaces.

Specific features of a field hockey shoe

Field field hockey shoes have sport-specific features:
The outsole, the part of the sole in contact with the ground, is generally made of rubber and has studs on its surface, in various shapes and positions. It is hard, unlike a trail shoe. It is adapted to synthetic, sanded or wet turf, specific to field field hockey. Its purpose is to ensure grip on the pitch, crucial in field field hockey.

It can also be fitted to the front of the shoe to protect the toes from impact.
The midsole, the thickness of the sole above the outsole, is generally made of EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate). It is used to cushion the impact of running on relatively hard field field hockey pitches.

It also generally rises in the inner part of the foot to stabilize the foot during numerous, heavy changes of direction in field field hockey.
The quarter, the inner and outer medial parts of the upper part of the shoe, generally made of PU and mesh fabric, is essential in field field hockey for good support of the foot through lacing.

PU inserts are also often used to reinforce the heel against impact, or sometimes simply as a design element (brand logo).
The heel counter, at the rear of the upper part of the shoe, generally made of soft PU reinforced on the inside by a rigid PU plate, serves to stabilize the heel and protect the achilles tendon against impact.

Specific features of a field hockey shoe(continued)

The tongue, on the instep, generally made of foam and mesh fabric, serves in particular to protect the foot from splashes of water or various particles.

Safety Council

Field hockey is fun. Don't neglect your safety. Always wear your mouthguard, shin guards and a glove. Use field hockey shoes with protective reinforcements and soles adapted to the playing surface. Wear a mask and special gloves when playing hockey. In matches and training sessions alike.
