The principle of a self-inflating mattress
A self-inflating mattress consists of a waterproof envelope glued to an open-cell foam in which air circulates. When you unfold your mattress, it will take on its shape and thickness (2.5 cm for this MT100 mattress) and fill with air. However, you'll need to finish inflating it by mouth, which also allows you to adjust the pressure to your comfort level. Self-inflation is more or less perceptible, depending on the thickness of the mattress.
Easy assembly and disassembly
When you first use your mattress, unroll it with the valve open for 24 hours on a flat surface, then inflate it and leave the valve closed for 24 hours, pressurized. You can then store it again. When bivouacking, take your mattress out and unroll it as soon as you arrive at camp, valve open, to facilitate pre-inflation. A self-inflating mattress inflates itself to around 60-70%. The rest of the inflation should be done by mouth, to adjust the pressure to your comfort level.
What is R-Value?
The R-Value is a measure of thermal resistance. It measures the ability of a mattress to retain or prevent heat escaping from a warm body (the human body) to a cold floor.
The higher the R-Value, the better the mattress insulation.
Note that R-Values are additive; this means you can use 2 mattresses and add up their R-Values.
All our mattresses are tested to ASTM F3340-18.
Which R-Value for which use?
R-value from 0 to 1.9: Hot season (summer) use only
R-value from 2 to 3: Use over 2 or 3 seasons (spring-summer-fall)
R-value from 3 to 4: Use over 4 seasons
R-value from 4.5 and +: Use over 4 seasons and in extreme conditions (glacier, far north and high altitude)
Tips for sleeping well on your mattress
Once you're lying down, remember to adjust the mattress inflation pressure by pressing lightly on the IN valve (open cap). A mattress that is too hard is often synonymous with discomfort.
Silicone patches on the top of the mattress are designed to reduce the slippage of your sleeping bag on the mattress.
How do you repair a leak in your mattress?
An air mattress is not indestructible, but it can be repaired!
When using an air mattress, great care must be taken in installation and handling.
In the event of a problem, we recommend the use of self-adhesive repair patches (ref: 8557113).
