Sleeves on the outer edges of this mouthpiece cover the ring junctions, preventing the pinching that can sometimes occur with loose-ring bits, especially on horses with fleshy lips. Loose ring cheeks can help discourage binding and tipping, as they are much more mobile than fixed cheek bits. The single-jointed mouthpiece creates a nutcracker action and acts on the lips and bars of the mouth, which, combined with loose ring cheeks, makes it an ideal choice for horses with a tendency to lean.
