The Tom Thumb bit is a cross between an American gag and an elevator bit. It offers greater precision and control and is very popular for show jumping and cross-country. It has a lifting effect at the front that can help the rider sit the horse on its hocks, enabling tighter turns and more efficient jumping. The lifting action combined with head pressure can also deter horses from leaning on the bit. Can be used with a single rein on the snaffle ring or lower ring or, for greater precision, with two reins.
The rhombus in the center of this bit follows the shape of the tongue and helps reduce the nutcracker action of a single-joint bit, creating a soft contact and giving clear rein commands. Brass alloy is formed when copper is alloyed with a harder metal, producing a warm, durable material that is perfect for horse bits as it can facilitate salivation and be more palatable to the horse. A useful bit for horses that tend to lean on the rider's hands.
