The Tom Thumb bit is a cross between an American gag and an elevator bit. It offers greater precision and control and is very popular for show jumping and cross-country. It has a lifting effect at the front that can help the rider sit the horse on its hocks, enabling tighter turns and more efficient jumping. The lifting action combined with head pressure can also deter horses from leaning on the bit. Can be used with a single rein on the snaffle ring or lower ring or, for greater precision, with two reins.
The Waterford mouthpiece is made up of a series of ball-shaped links, making it completely mobile in all directions. It is particularly appreciated for combating problems such as inclination, bit grip and jaw position. When the horse tries to grip the bit, the mouthpiece collapses, leaving the horse with nothing rigid to hold on to.
Brass alloy is formed when copper is alloyed with a harder metal, resulting in a warm, durable material that is perfect for horse bits, as it promotes salivation and is more palatable to the horse. The Waterford mouthpiece combined with the Tom Thumb action gives a strong action and, therefore, this bit should only be used by experienced riders. It must also be worn 1/4' to 1/2' wider than standard to be effective.
