Discoloration of brakes after prolonged and uninterrupted use, for example downhill, impairs braking performance. Shimano has introduced brake discs and pads with Ice Technologies to create cooling technology for consistently high braking performance. The brake disc has a three-layer sandwich structure of stainless steel on the outside around an aluminum core. It diffuses heat better and, for example, reduces a surface temperature from 400˚C to 300˚C. There's also a cooling fin on the brake pad.
