What's a softshell?
This is a warm, protective jacket that protects you from the wind and a short shower (approx. 30 min) of light rain or snow. The fabric used is a blend of 3 materials. A breathable, windproof micro-porous membrane is sandwiched between the water-repellent outer face and the warm, comfortable fleece inner face.
Thermal comfort and windproofness
Wind considerably increases the sensation of cold. For example, at an outside temperature of 0°C, a 20 km/h wind will cause the perceived temperature to drop to -10°C. Windproof components eliminate the discomfort associated with this cooling effect. By forming a barrier against the wind, they effectively reduce heat loss.
Breathability
The main fabric, present throughout the jacket except for the sides, features a windproof membrane with a breathability of 2814 g/m2 /24 h (according to JIS 1099 A).
Component water repellency (not to be confused with waterproofing)
A fabric's water repellency is its ability to let water slide off its surface, without absorbing it.
So your jacket doesn't become waterlogged, and remains light and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by a treatment applied to the outer face of the fabric, but can be altered with use.
Water repellency can be reactivated by tumbling the jacket for 10 minutes at low temperature.
