Several levels of mechanical resistance are specified in standard EN 166. This standard can be transposed to shooting sports.
They are designed to protect the wearer against the projection of particles.
Enhanced strength: the lenses must withstand the impact of a steel ball weighing 43 g and with a diameter of 22 mm launched at a speed of 5.1 m/s. These lenses are marked "S". These lenses are marked "S".
Low-energy impact: the lenses must withstand the impact of a steel ball weighing 0.86 g and with a diameter of 6 mm launched at 45 m/s (i.e. 162 km/h). These lenses are marked "F".
Other CE standard levels
Medium-energy impact: the test is similar to the previous one, with a speed of 120 m/s (i.e. 432 km/h). The marking will be "B".
A high-energy impact: the test is again similar, the speed being 190 m/s (i.e. 684 km/h). These lenses are marked "A"
For these tests, the temperature is 23°C.
