HIKING AND TREKKING DOWN JACKETS: THE HIKER'S ANTI-COLD WEAPON

Hiking down jackets are a must-have for all trekkers and hikers in the mountains and during the winter months. Filled with synthetic or down, they are available with or without sleeves, in a wide range of colors and finishes that often make all the difference from one model to the next. Depending on whether you're an occasional winter walker or you're gearing up for a hike in the Alps, you'll opt for a model that effectively combats the cold. SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A DOWN OR SYNTHETIC TREKKING JACKET?

The down comforter is 100% natural, as its filling is made from duck or goose feather. The fuller it is, the better it insulates you from the cold. The degree of insulation is measured in Cuin. The higher it is, the greater the volume of air contained in the fleece, and the better insulated you'll be. The price of a down hiking jacket is high. It has the advantage of being highly compressible, more robust than synthetic down jackets and provides excellent protection from the cold. On the other hand, synthetic down jackets are easier to care for and dry more quickly. Down jackets made from technical fabrics are waterproof.

SHOULD I CHOOSE A TREKKING DOWN JACKET WITH OR WITHOUT A HOOD?

Hiking down jackets with hoods play a vital role in the mountains. They protect the head from the cold. And that's no mean feat when you consider that 30% to 40% of heat loss occurs through the head. You can opt for a down jacket with a detachable hood, either zipped or held in place with snaps and drawstrings. Removing the hood is just as pleasant as removing the sleeves on mid-season hiking down jackets.

HOW TO CARE FOR A DOWN JACKET

Either take it to the dry cleaners, or run it through your washing machine. Some models are programmed for this type of garment. To dry the garment and restore its fullness, place a tennis ball in the dryer. This will preserve the puffiness. Synthetic down jackets are easier to care for. They can generally be put in the washing machine and dry faster than a down touring jacket. If you're worried about mistreating your garment, take it to a dry cleaner. Dry-cleaning will restore it to like-new condition.
